High School Credit. WSMTA’s high school credit program is an effort to help our member teachers to comply with requirements of independent study courses allowed by school districts. WSMTA is not a degree-granting institution; we do not track student records.

If you would like your students to receive high school credit in Applied Music for studying with you, you need to have them take the completed High School Credit packet to their school officials for pre-approval at the beginning of the school year. To be eligible, teachers must have a current NCTM or WSCTM certification, and students must participate in MAP and perform two pieces from memory.

This is how the program works:

    1. Course Approval. At the beginning of the school year, Teacher completes a Request For Credit Form from the High School Credit packet and give to Student to bring to school counselor for pre-approval to register in Independent Study. Schools may have additional Independent Study form that must be completed. The Request For Credit form is a course proposal that details the curriculum of study, activities, and agreed-upon hours spent. Normally this is done about two weeks before school year begins.

    2. Track Attendance. During the school year, Teacher needs to keep track of lesson attendance and Student must log practice hours. Normally teachers are required to teach a minimum of 36 weeks (and a minimum of 45 minutes of lesson time a week) in a school year, and students must practice 5 hours a week. That brings a minimum total of 207 hours that must be documented.

    3. Participate in MAP. In February through April, Teacher brings Student to perform in front of Visiting Artists at the Music Artistry Program event organized by your local chapter.  Performance in front of Visiting Artists serves as an independent evaluation of Student’s work. Student receives a written critique, a Certificate of Achievement and a gold seal, indicating that he/she has completed this requirement.

    4. Turn in Report. At the end of the school year, Student turns in the following to the school counselor to receive credit:

    • Music Artistry Program Certificate
    • Documentation of hours spent
    • Report in Applied Music Study Form with a recommendation for grade
