Join or Renew your Membership

Washington State Music Teachers Association (WSMTA) is affiliated with Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).

Music Teachers National Association’s website is www.mtna.org and you can join or renew your membership online. The online form only takes a few minutes to complete: Go to MTNA and join/renew.
Simply follow the instructions in MTNA’s online form. Choose your membership category, your state and local association, and complete the information fields.

When you join the national association (MTNA) you also choose a state affiliate which, in WA state is the Washington State Music Teachers Association (WSMTA). There are different types of membership:

1. MTNA Active (Standard) Membership
Includes:  Senior, Dual, Member-at-Large, State Honorary Life

Open to all individuals who are professionally engaged in any field of music activity in the State of Washington. Conveys the privileges of participation in all Association activities:

  • The right to attend meetings and programs
  • To vote
  • Hold office
  • Enter students in Association programs at member rates
  • Receive the official Association publications
Senior Membership
  • Reached the age of seventy (70) years.
  • Active member in good standing for a minimum of five (5) successive years immediately preceding application for Senior Membership.
  • Senior Membership conveys all rights and privileges of Active Membership.
Dual Membership
  • A husband/wife when one qualifies as an Active member.
  • The Active Member shall pay full National and State dues.
  • The spouse shall pay full National dues and one half of the regular State dues.
  • Conveys all the rights and privileges of Active Membership except the couple shall receive one subscription to Association Publications.
Member-at-Large
  • Open to all individuals professionally engaged in any field of musical activity in the State of Washington where no local chapter exists.
  • Conveys all rights and privileges of Active Membership.

2. Student (Collegiate) Membership

  • Collegiate Membership is open to all college music students who are also members of an affiliated state association and a collegiate chapter (if available). Collegiate members enjoy all benefits of membership, but do not have the right to vote or hold office or enter students in MTNA Competitions.
  • MTNA National Collegiate membership dues are $19.
  • Washington State local/district dues vary by Chapter. Once you join MTNA, you will be asked to select your state and Local Chapter.
  • Open to any music student through the age of twenty-six (26)
  • Currently involved in regular music study in the State of Washington.
  • Conveys all rights and privileges of Active Membership, except the right to vote and hold office or enter students into MTNA competitions.
  • Any student beyond the age of twenty-six (26) who returns to a college, university or conservatory as a full-time music student shall have the option of Student Membership for a period not to exceed four consecutive years, subject to the membership regulations of WSMTA.

3. Other types of MTNA membership include:

  • International Member
  • Patron Member
  • Corporate Member
  • Institutional Member

1. WSMTA High School Student Teacher Membership

WSMTA High School Student Teacher Membership is open to all high school music student teachers who become members of an affiliated chapter. High School Student Teachers members enjoy all benefits of state membership, but do not have the right to vote or hold office or enter students in MTNA Competitions. The membership year runs from September 1 through August 30.

  • WSMTA High School membership dues are $15 (plus additional chapter fees as applicable)
  • WSMTA High School members require you to join a Local Chapter
  • High School Student Teachers are not eligible to join MTNA

2. WSMTA Associate Membership

Associate membership is open to businesses, corporations, institutions, organizations, and individuals who have an interest in furthering the mission of WSMTA.  Associate members pay dues of $110 per year.

Associate Membership entitles one person from the business, corporation, institution, or organization the rights and privileges of active membership with the exception of holding office or of entering students into Association competitions and activities.

Associate members receive:
  • a link on the WSMTA website
  • advertising in the CLARION at member rates
  • a 10% discount for advertising and/or exhibiting at the annual WSMTA Conference in June
  • a 20% discount if both advertising and exhibiting
