Happy New Year!

Like many teachers I think in terms of school year and not calendar year. To non-teachers this always sounds strange, but I embrace this quirk now. It can be a fun conversation starter.

As I write this many of us are finalizing our calendars and plans for the fall and coming year. It is an exciting time where we get to implement new ideas we have gained at conference or through other learning and embark on new adventures with students and colleagues.

This is the time of year where we say “Yes” to a lot of things with anticipation and excitement. As musicians – educators and performers – it is easy to get caught up in helping others and participating for the joy of what can be created. Remember to not overwhelm yourself. There is balance in saying “No.”

This past year I have had to learn to say “No” more and it continues to be difficult. “No” is more than just an action, it is also a boundary.

Last year I had to say “no” to accompanying at State Solo/Ensemble contest, even though I had performed with those students at the local competition. While I was sad to not perform with them at the State level, I made the right choice in setting a boundary and sticking with it as I was able to be present for my son and other activities. I am learning to embrace my limits, which is not easy to do. I am still learning how to do this, as most of us are. The role of teacher is often to give and give with no limits. I do not know if setting boundaries ever gets easier.

Theoretically, by setting boundaries you are better able to find balance. This provides more energy and enthusiasm for collaboration, be it in teaching, performing, or any other area of your life.

As the year begins anew I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the leadership seminar at the end of September, chapter visits, and the state conference in June.
